Custom Fitted Furniture for Fine Homes

The fitted furniture look has become the most sought after feature in our kitchens. Incorporating legs, columns, corbels and moldings have been the most popular features. However even “dressed down” cabinetry is demanding greater attention to detail and design. Most of our clients want a raised seating area on either a bar or an island. Many of our Islands complement but do not match the main cabinetry.  I am finding that we are spending more time on the planning stages in the process of creating than before. Our clients are more knowledgeable and are looking for ways to incorporate very specific details into their projects. Lately we have designed several kitchens with transom like windows that swing up on cabinets at  the ceiling.

We work in a wide variety of finishes. About half are specifically created for the client. Most of the finishes involve glazing. Much of this is done over paint, eggshell base is strong, but we also have done some over custom color base coats. We also are finding a strong return to darker colors. The main exception to this is in the rustic market. Here we are doing a lot of rustic hickory and knotty alder. These are being finished with natural finishes, some with glaze.

Practical uses of space are being required as people are trying to unclutter their lives. I am finding that the more elaborate storage systems are being bypassed for basic roll out shelves and boxes. Roll out spice cabinets that use small areas are very popular. Many designs take advantage of otherwise wasted space with tray storage.  Deep pots and pan drawers are another area that is becoming requested. Roll out garbage/recycling bins seem to be incorporated into most designs.

Solid surface has completely given way to granite with our client base. We are seeing some request for limited area wood surfaces, usually around a salad prep area.

There is a trend to go to the counter depth or built in refrigerators. If stainless steel is not used, most use fronts to match cabinetry.  Wine coolers, ice machines, and warming drawers are increasingly being requested. Many or our clients are using 2 dishwashers.  Convection ovens are very popular.

The majority of our clients are practical with discriminating taste. They are looking for a balance in style and function. Most of our kitchens are used.
